What You Need

  • Large Container

  • Scooper

  • 8 cups (or one 1.84 kg box) Borax

  • 8 cups (or two 1 kg boxes) Baking Soda

  • 8-12 cups Super Washing Soda

  • 3 bars of Ivory Soap (grated) or approx. 3 cups of Soap Flakes

How To Make

  • In a large container, mix together super washing soda, borax and baking soda.  This can create a lot of dust so it’s best to mix in a well ventilated area.

  • Using a designated grater, grate Ivory bars and add to container.  Alternatively you can buy soap flakes that are already shredded for you.

  • Mix well.

  • Use 2 Tbsp per wash cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions…

1. Why make homemade laundry detergent?

Making your own homemade laundry detergent means you know exactly what’s in it. Store bought laundry detergent often contains fragrances and chemicals that may be irritating or toxic. Making your own laundry detergent is also cost effective, easy to make and lasts for months.

2. Is powdered better than liquid?

Personally I haven’t tried making liquid laundry detergent because I find powdered so easy to make, use and store. There is no heavy jug to lift and measure, which makes doing laundry easy for my kids to do. It stores nicely in a container and is always ready to use when needed.

3. Can I add fragrance?

Absolutely. You can add your favourite essential oils (approx. 20-30 drops) to the baking soda before mixing with the rest of the ingredients or put 5-10 drops into the compartment reserved for bleach before each load. There are also store bought fragrance boosters you can add to each load along with your DIY detergent.

4. Where do I find the ingredients?

All the ingredients for this recipe can be found at your local grocery or health store. You can also find them online.

Best Store Bought Laundry Detergent…

Have you ever came across a product and instantly thought how brilliant it is? That was my first impression of Tru Earth Eco Strips Laundry Detergent.

If you’re going to buy store bought, I highly recommend Tru Earth.  As much as I love making my own 6 month supply of DIY laundry soap, it’s also nice to have a back up I can feel good about.

Why Tru Earth?

  • No plastic packaging!  This is a HUGE selling point for me as I try to reduce our family’s excess waste.  Tru Earth Eco Strips come in a cardboard envelope containing biodegradable laundry strips.  The packaging can easily be recycled.

  • Easy to use!  Tru Earth Laundry Detergent comes in pre measured concentrated strips.  One strip equals one load of laundry.  For heavy loads, add an extra strip.  For small loads, use only half.  This is perfect for kids learning to do their own laundry (with supervision of course) as there are no heavy bottles to pour or measure.

  • Safe for all machines, biodegradable and dissolves completely. Simply add an eco strip to your top load washing machine or place in dispenser for front load washers (can tear into smaller pieces if necessary).

  • Made in Canada.  I love supporting local whenever I can.  And whether you’re Canadian or not, this is a company on a mission to do better for the planet.

  • Available at local stores, as well as online.

  • I want to make my own detergent but I love the smell of gain how can I make detergent to smell almost like it

    • Hi Mallari,

I’m with you! I love the fresh smell of laundry and will often use my favourite essential oils to add scent. You can either add essential oils (approx. 20-30 drops) to the baking soda before mixing with the rest of the ingredients or put 5-10 drops into the compartment reserved for bleach before each load.

But your question did get me thinking of some alternatives. I came across some helpful information suggesting Gain Fireworks fragrance booster, which you would add to each load along with your DIY detergent. Hope that helps! Let me know how it turns out!
