Chalk Paint Recipe

I have to admit, I’m new to the chalk painting scene. Partly because I’m used to painting it old school and partly because the price for a quart of chalk paint was too much for me to justify.

Easy Chalk Paint Recipe DIY

That all changed thanks to Pinterest. I came across an article for an easy chalk paint recipe that was the perfect blend of ingredients, which means not too chalky but chalky enough to do its job…does that make sense?

I happened to have all the ingredients on hand so it only took me minutes to make, was really great to paint with and has kept well in the plastic yogurt container I mixed it in…months later!

This recipe comes from Kara at Etourneau.org. She has a great tutorial about making chalk paint and takes you through step by step.  Click here to visit.

For that reason, I’m not going into too much detail, just the bare bones recipe…

What You Need

  • Container for mixing (I used a plastic yogurt container)

  • Water

  • Plaster of Paris

  • Regular Latex Paint

  • Paint stick for stirring

  • Measuring cup

Directions

  • The ratio is 3 parts paint, 1 part water, and 1 part plaster of paris (3:1:1)

  • First, mix the water and plaster of paris.  Mix this well to get out any lumps. Then add the latex paint, whatever colour you want (adding the plaster will alter the colour slightly…at least it did for me)

  • Mix well. That’s it!

Congratulations, you just made chalk paint!

(You may want to take precautions when mixing the plaster of paris by wearing a mask and gloves.  Always a good idea to read the directions before using)
